Throwback Thursday: Convention 1984

#ThrowbackThursday to the 1984 ACA Convention. Pictured are ACA’s Dr. Billy Powell, comedian Jerry Clower, Alabama’s lead singer Randy Owen, Dian Thomas from NBC’s Today Show and Terry Bradshaw, Pittsburg Steelers quarterback of the time. That’s a lot of personality in one picture! Who remembers these folks? 

Throwback Thursday: November 1988

#ThrowbackThursday to November 1988, which was all about the Santa Gertrudis breed in Alabama. This picture show’s Mrs. Ann Upchurch, owner of Grey Rocks Ranch in Selma, as she was presented a special award for her many outstanding accomplishments as a Santa Gertrudis breeder. She built one of the largest, most successful herds in the state. Mrs. Upchurch (second from the left) is shown with the Win Parmer family who managed her operation.

 

Throwback Thursday: 1987

This week’s #ThrowbackThursday throws back to 1987 and some early beef checkoff action! After members of the Southeast Cattle Marketing Association decided there was more to beef than production and marketing, they decided to give more than just lip service to beef promotion. During the association’s 1987 special sale hosted in Montgomery, each producer donated $1 per head in the sale to the ACA. Pictured is 1987 SCMA President Mose Tucker (left) as he presents ACA representative Cecil Lane (right) with a $3400 check to use in beef promotion efforts.

Today, the Beef Checkoff is still continuing the legacy of beef promotion! 

Throwback Thursday: 1981

The Montgomery State Steer Show used to be and still is the biggest calf show in state! Today, it's called the Alabama State Steer Show and is part of the Junior Beef Expo! This week, as we begin to plan for the upcoming SLE rodeo season (which entails the JBE), we thought it'd be fun to reflect on some of our old state show pictures! This one stood out because not only was it one of the early full-color pages of the Alabama Cattleman magazine, but it featured a perfect example of how showing calves can develop a child into a leader. Featured for this week's #ThrowbackThursday from the year 1981 is the Alabama Farmer's Federation Executive Director Paul Pinyan with his Reserve Champion steer at the Montgomery State Steer Show.

The steer was bought by W.S. “Billy” Newell, left, and J.W. “Mac” Casey, center, for a price of $5.00 per pound. Newell and Casey donated the steer to the Alabama Sheriff’s Boys Ranch in memory of Tine W. Davis.

Throwback Thursday: 1976

Cattle rustling is something that’s always been around and something authorities have always taken very seriously. The ACA used to have a Cattle Theft Reward Program that offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone stealing cattle from the premises of a member. 

Fun Fact- that program is still active today, and the award is now worth $1,000!

This week’s #tbt is of that program and one of its recipients in 1976. Pictured is Earl Davidson (left) of Athens as he’s presented his $500 check for helping convict two cattle rustlers stealing cattle from a Limestone County Cattlemen’s Association member. (R-L) Presenting the check was 1976 ACA President Ray Jones, Limestone County Cattlemen’s Association President Billy Maples and Department of Agriculture Cattle Theft Investigator Joe Scott.

Throwback Thursday- Summer 1974

In honor of our membership drive to reach 12,000 members for 2015, this week’s #ThrowbackThursday goes back to the year the ACA had the most members in our history- 1974. That year, ACA had 18,620 members in the state!

Speaking of lots of folks, the summer of 1974 was a big time for the Cullman County Cattlemen and CattleWomen’s Association as it hosted an annual meeting with over 400 attendees.

Pictured from left to right are the county leaders of that year- Hoyt Perdue, Vice President; Edwin Carter, Vice President; Dois Sims, President; Davis Hassell, Secretary Treasurer; Kenneth Neal, Vice President; W.A. Fullilove, Vice President. The group had a steak dinner and heard from 1974 ACA President, Forrest Killough.

This week’s #ThrowbackThursday might just throw you back in your seat! 

Pictured is Tine Davis, owner of Todiway Acres in Pike Road, AL in 1964 with a a polled Hereford bull from his operation that sold for $10,000. 

Throwback Thursday: 1964

This week's #ThrowbackThursday goes all the way back to 1964, and it features W.R. Lanier (Lanier Hereford Farms) of Jachin, Ala. 

Here he and one of his Hereford cattle are pictured with the top beef judges of an ACA sponsored event. 

Lanier later became the president of the ACA in 1978.
