The state’s beef cattle industry and the Auburn University College of Agriculture were recognized during the Auburn-FSU football game. Throwback Thursday: December 1989

#ThrowbackThursday to December 1989 when stockyard reps, packers, order buyers and dealers were invited to a meeting at the Cattlemen’s Building to receive an update on the beef promotion program. A few good men stopped for a picture and those men are (L-R) ACA beef promotion field man Ed Whatley, Richard Webster, Montgomery; Sam Carter, Frisco City; Pervy Thames, Robertsdale and Tommy Moseley, Linden. 

Throwback Thursday: October Beef Month 1985

#ThrowbackThursday to 1985 in Franklin County. Pictured are members of the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Associations and CowBelles as they pose with school officials from the county. The Cattlemen and CowBelles donated a butchered steer to the schools’ home economics departments. 1985 was the fifth year to do this in observation of October Beef Month in Alabama.

Throwback Thursday: 1986

Who remembers the drought of 1986 that so harshly threatened Alabama cattlemen’s ability to feed their cattle that it brought about national attention and aid?

The drought called the attention of the Emergency Cattle Feed Task Force which met in the ACA building to discuss ways of helping cattlemen meet immediate and long-term needs. Colorado, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Louisiana and Californian ranchers sent hay via Air Force carriers, 100+ rail cars and truckloads to meet the needs of Alabama’s cattle industry.

This just goes to show that the beauty of the American beef industry is that we take care of one another; we have each other's backs. We will stop at nothing to put the care of livestock as a top priority, no matter if it's ours, our neighbors' or a complete strangers'. Animal husbandry is our trade.

Throwback Thursday: 1984

This week's #ThrowbackThursday throws back all the way to 1984! This was a big year for the ACA because not only was it celebrating its 40th birthday, but it was also named the largest state Cattlemen's Association in the United States...again...with 16,700 members submitted to nationals. That's a lot to celebrate!

Throwback Thursday: 1983

#ThrowbackThursday to 1983 in Blount County. Debter Hereford Farm served as the host of the Southern Regional Junior Hereford Show and Field day, and the “Debter clan” hosts and hostesses are pictured below. Glynn and Ross Debter, Mrs. Glenn Debter and Mr. and Mrs. Perry Debter and their daughter. The event on their farm included livestock judging contests, a junior heifer and bull show and beef industry workshops.

Throwback Thursday: 1980

Fuller Supply Company is a longtime sponsor of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association. To show our appreciation for their involvement with our association, we thought this week’s #tbt should feature Mr. Bill Fuller (left) as Dr. Michael Sprott, past director of the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service, presents him with a plaque honoring Fuller Supply Co.’s continued support of livestock research and extension programs at Auburn. Year- 1980.

Throwback Thursday: 1979

The year 1979 was a good one for Kittiwake Farms of Jasper, Ala! This week’s #ThrowbackThursday pictures the trophy presentation of the Reserve Champion Bull at the Alabama Polled Hereford Association’s annual Blue Ribbon Show. From L-R are Kittiwake owner Grady Sparks, show judge Truman Lawrence and Kittiwake manager Bob Ebert. 

After many out of Alabama while operating in other states, Kittiwake returned to Alabama. Everyone loves a good "return to the farm" story!

Throwback Thursday: 1978

In honor of the 2015 AJCA Round-Up, this week’s #ThrowbackThursday will throw you back to 1978’s dapper group of AJCA officers.

Throwback Thursday: 1976

Cattle rustling is something that’s always been around and something authorities have always taken very seriously. The ACA used to have a Cattle Theft Reward Program that offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone stealing cattle from the premises of a member. 

Fun Fact- that program is still active today, and the award is now worth $1,000!

This week’s #tbt is of that program and one of its recipients in 1976. Pictured is Earl Davidson (left) of Athens as he’s presented his $500 check for helping convict two cattle rustlers stealing cattle from a Limestone County Cattlemen’s Association member. Throwback Thursday- Summer 1974

In honor of our membership drive to reach 12,000 members for 2015, this week’s #ThrowbackThursday goes back to the year the ACA had the most members in our history- 1974. That year, ACA had 18,620 members in the state!

Speaking of lots of folks, the summer of 1974 was a big time for the Cullman County Cattlemen and CattleWomen’s Association as it hosted an annual meeting with over 400 attendees.

Pictured from left to right are the county leaders of that year- Hoyt Perdue, Vice President; Edwin Carter, Vice President; Dois Sims, President; Davis Hassell, Secretary Treasurer; Kenneth Neal, Vice President; W.A. Fullilove, Vice President. The group had a steak dinner and heard from 1974 ACA President, Forrest Killough.

Throwback Thursday: 1964

This week's #ThrowbackThursday goes all the way back to 1964, and it features W.R. Lanier (Lanier Hereford Farms) of Jachin, Ala. 

Here he and one of his Hereford cattle are pictured with the top beef judges of an ACA sponsored event. 

Lanier later became the president of the ACA in 1978.
