What's Going On Wednesday: January 20, 2016
January is slipping away from us! Only one more Wednesday post before we are hopping along into Convention month. There's still a lot to be done to prepare, but plans for Convention are really shaping up. It's going to be a great time of fellowship, learning and experiencing all this industry has to offer. There's a lot more than just Convention going on, however. Keep reading to see #WhatsGoingOn around the Cattlemen's this week.
2016 ACA membership entered the day with 5,754 members so far. There's a lot of upcoming county meetings where numbers will jump. Be sure to check out the Cattlemen's Calendar to find out when your county annual meeting is and be sure to pay your dues before the increase goes into effect on March 1.
Help your county go “Over the Top” by Feb. 26th, and your county president will receive a red coat along with 20 rodeo tickets to share among the county chapter. "Over the Top" counties will also entered into the drawing to win the Priefet Squeeze Chute (Side Note: Counties must have at least 100 members to qualify for the squeeze chute). Congratualtions to Sumter County who's gone "Over the Top" with 93 members, seven more than 2015.
On Tuesday, ACA Director of Industry Relations Curt Berry traveled north to St. Clair and Cullman counties to four different operations. Curt's objective was to view nominations for the NCBA, NRCS and Soil and Water Conservation's Environmental Stewardship Award. Stay tuned to follow the progress of this award.
You're not going to want to miss this family fun show packed with entertainment! Frontier Rodeo Company, PRCA's Stock Contractor of the Year, will be bringing their best including PRCA Saddle Bronc of the Year, Medicine Woman! In between the bucking, bulldoggin' and barrels, Pro Rodeo master comedian Lecile Harris
will entertain the crowd while celebrating 60 years in the business! Don't forget your boogie boots because following Friday and Saturday nights' performances, you'll get to go Dancin' in the Dirt to the Sweet Young'Uns (Friday) and the Wes Loper Band (Saturday). Just in case that's not enough excitement, Thursday night is First Responders Night where FREE general admission is granted to anyone who can present a first responders identification. Friday night is Ladies Night where all ladies tickets will be submitted for some juicy door prizes drawn throughout the show! Lastly, bring those battle cries to the rodeo Saturday
night for College Night, where college students can receive 4 tickets for only $40 with the presentation of a valid college i.d.
is now available for teams interested in competing in the 2016 Cowboy Cookoff, held in conjunction with the SLE Rodeo on March 19 in Montgomery at the Garrett Coliseum. Prize money will be given to the Judges Choice winner ($500) and the People’s Choice winner ($250). Entry fee is only $100 and we will provide you with the steaks! Questions? Dr. Billy Powell met with Garrett Coliseum staff this week and is holding a meeting Friday with SLE officers to finalize plans for this year's SLE Rodeo. He says it's shaping up to be the best one in 59 years!
Dr. Powell also talked to Alabama Junior Cinch and Senior High School Rodeos, and SLE is allowing them to hold rodeos in the Coliseum on March 12 and 13, prior to SLE week. This will be a great learning experience for these upcoming rodeo cowboys and cowgirls.

Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame
The ballots have been mailed to the 37 living members encouraging them to vote on individuals for induction into the Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame at Convention on Saturday, February 27. Two new honarees and a Pioneer Inductee will be inducted with their families at side. Be sure to get those ballots in!Farm Tours

Howdy, folks! Has it already been a week since the last #WhatsGoingOnWednesday post? Wow time sure does fly when you're busy working for Alabama's cattlemen. It's a very busy time of year for the ACA state staff as we are preparing for the 73rd annual ACA Convention and Trade Show and the upcoming SLE Rodeo! Aside from those two large-scale events, there's smaller projects, events and meetings happening constantly around the ACA building. The February magazine is the Convention issue, so hang on to it to4-H Skill-A-Thon and Quiz Bowl
Saturday ACA staffer Curt Berry went to the 4-H Skill-A-Thon and Quiz Bowl at the 4-H Center in Columbiana. While there, Curt visited with junior cattlemen from across the state, learned more about the contest and watched the well-prepared students compete with their knowledge of animal agriculture. He was impressed with the amount of preparation and farm knowledge goes into this event. Great job, juniors!JBE Fundraising
Speaking of juniors, Curt has been very busy working with the Junior Beef Expo Fundraising Committee to gain sponsorships for this year's show. SLE President Thomas Ellis, Van Smith, Rusty Roden, Jimmy Parnell and Paul Pinyan have multiple meetings this week to discuess fundraising efforts. DYW at ACA
Tomorrow the ACA will host the Distinguished Young Women of Alabama for a lunch and learn about the state’s cattle industry. Contestants from across the state will enjoy a beef lunch, try to stump Dr. Powell with their hometown’s county location, tour The MOOseum and participate in a beef trivia contest to test their knowledge about beef. For the last meeting before Convention, the YCLP Class II students will be joining Dr. Don Mulvaney in southeast Alabama this Saturday and Sunday for farm tours and leadership training. The group will take their first stop in Eufala at Corcoran Farms, visit the Headland Research Center, tour Meadow Creek Farm then retire to Dothan for dinner and leadership sessions. Sunday morning, the group will enjoy breakfast and more training and head back to the farm. This is the final get together before their graduation from the program which will take place at Convention. This group has visted farms across the state, toured a packing facility, participated in hours of leadership training, networked among millennial cattlemen in Alabama and learned about the ACA and the legislative process. It's been a successful year for the class, and they are excited for the upcoming Class III to experience all they have. Cowboy Cookoff

In preparation for a new president after his installation at the upcoming convention, ACA staffers Kayla Greer and Curt Berry spent Tuesday afternoon at President-Elect Bill Lipscomb's homestead. While there, the staffers took Alabama Cattleman cover pictures of Bill and his wife, Susan, and visited with the couple while learning about their Prattville operation. Bill is very excited for his upcoming presidency and cannot wait to meet as many members as possible.
He and Susan are picture-perfect! Thanks, Mr. Bill and Mrs. Susan for spending the afternoon with Kayla and Curt!

What's Going On Wednesday: So Long, 2015!
Who can believe that there's just over a week left in the 2015 year? The state staffers feel so blessed and honored to be working for the best cattlemen there are, Alabama cattlemen. This is the last #WhatsGoingOn blog post of 2015. As we reflect over the year, it's been an exciting one for sure, but one that wouldn't be possible without our outstanding state officers, executive committee, Board, county officers, members and partner organizations. Happy New Year- let's make 2016 the best yet!
AJCA Directors Visit the Capitol City
ACA Director of Industry Relations and Youth Activities Curt, with the help of the state staff team, hosted a successful AJCA Director's December meeting and leadership training session. The directors planned events for 2016, received social media, issues management and "ag"vocate training and dined at the Capitol City Club. Not only did they get to enjoy one another's company, but they learned great leadership skills to be used in the future and prepared for an exciting 2016 year!

ACA Membership Coordinator Selina Knight wants to encourage everyone to pay annual dues NOW at only $30 or pay for three years at only $90! This is a reminder that the dues increase will take effect on March 1, 2016!

Producer Relations Staffer Travels East
ACA staffer Curt Berry has spent most of the week out of the office! Just because he's not behind his desk doesn't mean he's not busy, though. Curt is spending his time this week visiting with producers in Chambers and Randolph counties and in the Wiregrass region.
He will be visiting the Wiregrass Research Station in Headland to attend the Alabama Forage and Grassland Conference. ACA staff handled the registration for the conference, and the state checkoff is a major sponsor. ACA Vice President Richard Meadows along with Curt will be on hand to greet cattle producers from across the state. Be sure to stop by and visit with them!
Planning for Convention
Dr. Powell, Martha Davis and Erin Beasley spent Monday in Birmingham at the Sheraton Hotel where they toured the facilities with hotel staff and ironed out 2016 Convention and Trade Show details.Save the dates for Convention. AISA Football All-Stars
The ACA is hosting the Alabama Independent School Association All-Star Football players to a steak dinner this evening at the Cattlemen's Building. Tomorrow, the ACA will host the Obesity Task Force quarterly meeting in the building. This group is comprised of dietitians and health professionals who aim to improve the obesity epidemic in Alabama. ACA's Erin Beasley will speak to them about beef nutrition resources and give an update on the “Protein + Exercise=Success” challenge we did in October/November with the Family and Consumer Science teachers in Alabama.Branding Education for Food Service

In case you didn't know, Pro Rodeo master comedian Lecile Harris is taking the SLE Rodeo stage for our upcoming rodeo to celebrate his 60th anniversary in the business! In celebration of this milestone, Lecile has released an autobiography of his adventures titled Lecile: This Ain't My First Rodeo. Save the dates for the 2016 ACA Convention and Trade Show! Cattlemen will join from across the state on February 26-27, 2016 at the Sheraton in Downtown Birmingham for education, updates, fellowship and a trade show that alone is worth the trip! Senator Richard Shelby and NCBA's Dr. Kim Stackhouse are just two of the speakers to look forward to at this year's convention! ACA staffers are also working with the Sheraton staff to plan menus, room arrangements and prices. The completed schedule along with Convention registration will be released online by December 20. Complete info will be in the January issue of the Alabama Cattleman magazine.
Tidbits, Updates and Announcements:
- The final proof for 2016 State Checkoff Marketing Plan has been sent to press! Copies will be sent to Board of Directors and auction markets statewide. It will also be available online for viewing.
- The deadline for receiving Foundation scholarship applications has passed. Those applications are now being sorted through and are getting ready for presentation to the selection committee.
- AU Animal Science scientists will be excited to find out if their funding requests were approved by Board for beef cattle research projects. Be on the lookout for those notifications.
- Dr. Billy Powell and Curt Berry will be attending the Black and White Bull Sale Friday and Next Step Cattle Company sale on Saturday. They're also stopping by the AGR Christmas Classic steer show in Auburn to support the ACA's sponsorship of the show. While in Auburn, they'll also be presenting the sponsorship check for FFA Steer show the following day.

Happy Veterans Day to our service men and women!
America is the land of the free because of the brave! We salute those who have served or are currently active in the United States Military. There is no acceptable amount of "thank yous" to express our sincere gratitude.
While we reflect on our undying gratitude of those who have served, we also want to give a quick update on #WhatsGoingOn around the ACA offices this week! It may be drawing near the end of 2015, but that just means planning for 2016 is well underway! Check it out:
Meeting at Mid State
The Agriculture and Industries Board met Monday evening at Mid State Stockyard
and were introduced into the stockyard business and how it runs. ACA's Dr. Billy Powell and Mid State's Rebecca Loftin tagged team the discussion that informed the group of the Board's policies that so deeply affect daily operations at the stockyards, such as scale management. The group then enjoyed a meal from Southern Comfort in Hope Hull, AL.Agriculture and Industries Board Meeting
The same Board that met at Mid State Stockyard Tuesday night also met Tuesday morning for their quarterly Board meeting. At the meeting, they passed laws to help strengthen and protect the agriculture industry in Alabama. Specific to us was the revision of a rule to have bulls tested for Bovine Trichomoniasis before entering the state. ACA staffer Curt Berry was in attendance.Special Guests at The MOOseum
You never know where folks who stop by The MOOseum will come from and a visit on Tuesday proved that! Tuesday morning a group from the Hartford-Litchfield Sister Cities program stopped by to learn about Alabama's Beef Industry. For 44 years, the cities of Hartford, AL and Litchfield, MN have exchanged FFA students and community members to learn about agriculture in other parts of the nation! We were so excited to host this group of FFA students from Minnesota, and we hope they learned a lot about how beef is raised in Alabama. Heading North of the River
Several ACA staffers will head out early Wednesday morning for an overnight trip to north Alabama. While visiting Madison, Limestone and Lauderdale counties, the group will be shooting video footage to use with in The MOOseum's future renovations! It's hoped to captured the rolling hills and fall foliage of the Tennessee Valley!Stops will be made at ACA President Jim Akin's farm, Past President Donna Jo Curtis' operation, Brad Brooks' farm that sits on the Tennessee River and Thornton Stanley, Jr.'s operation in Madison County. Thanks to all our producers who are taking time from their work to smile for the camera! We appreciate it and so will the thousands of children who visit The MOOseum in the future.
November Board & Executive Committee Meetings
Planning is well-underway for next week's Board and Executive Committee meetings. November 18-19, your ACA staff and state representatives will be in Montgomery receiving updates from state officers and staff as well as reviewing the 2016 Beef Checkoff Marketing Plan.2016 Convention and Trade Show
A lot of time and planning this week have been dedicated to the 2016 ACA Convention. Developing a Cattlemen's College plan and contacting potential keynote speakers were at the top of the to-do list! ACA staffer Martha Davis is also busy with sponsorships for the Convention, the Junior Beef Expo and the SLE Rodeo!Be sure to save the dates for the 2016 ACA Convention and Trade Show to be held February 26-27 at the Sheraton Hotel in Downtown Birmingham.
Diabetes and Obesity Conference
Ms. Davis has also stayed busy this week planning alongside Dr. Evelyn Crayton for the 14th annual Diabetes and Obesity Conference that will be held at the ACA building next Friday. The ACA building offers wonderful meeting places for our Association and others around the state. It is a wonderful asset to the ACA.
