Texas Sheriff Investigating Animal Cruelty Video

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Castro County Sheriff's office is investigating a dairy farm for animal cruelty based on a graphic video of abuse being circulated by an animal-rights group. The hidden-camera video footage was shot by an undercover agent of Chicago-based Mercy for Animals (MFA) who was hired to work at E6 Cattle Co. in Hart, TX.

"The latest MFA video and the treatment of calves that it depicts is deplorable. No one in the animal agriculture industry can condone the actions of E6 employees in the video. In fact, industry-led education efforts like the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program are available to producers to teach them proper animal handling techniques, including how to properly administer humane euthanasia. In Alabama, we're currently pursuing multiple avenues to promote BQA education and certification because we know beef consumers expect cattlemen to deliver the highest standard of care to our animals and that's exactly what we want to do," says Dr. Billy Powell, Executive Vice President of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association.

Animal Ag 101: Coming Summer 2011

An exciting program being sponsored by the Alabama Coalition for Farm Animal Care & Well Being is set to debut across Alabama this summer. Animal Ag 101, patterned after a similar effort in Ohio, will bring together law enforcement officials, first responders, animal control officers, and others who are asked to play a roll during incidents of reported animal cruelty or other emergencies involving animals. This course will educate attendees not only on how to evaluate the condition and surroundings of livestock but also how to humanely handle all species of livestock. The course will be taught by veterinarians and other 3rd party experts and will also help establish a network of resources these officials can call upon for help in the future.

Stay tuned for more information on dates and locations of these upcoming educational programs.

Cattlemen's Stewardship Report Released

Today marks the release of “The Cattlemen’s Stewardship Review: Connecting Our Vision and Values,” a comprehensive look at the beef industry’s influence on communities, the economy, public health and the environment.

Similar, but different than a corporate social responsibility report, this is a unique report—it’s not about a company or organization, it’s about a community of small, independent, family-business owners whose goals are to meet the long-term food and nutritional needs of consumers globally. “The Cattlemen’s Stewardship Review: Connecting Our Vision and Values” highlights the accomplishments of America’s farmers and ranchers while also identifying opportunities for growth and improvement.
