Recap: Youth Activities During the SLE Rodeo

New Junior Cattlemen Event for 2011


There's exciting news for junior cattlemen in Alabama! For the first time in 2011, the Alabama Junior Cattlemen's Association will host the AJCA Pen Show to be held August 26th in Uniontown, AL.

This new event will offer all AJCA members the opportunity to consign open or bred heifers to an established heifer sale that's been connecting high quality females with eager buyers for years. A strong cattle market adds even more anticipation for the AJCA Pen Show.

Livestock Judging Camp in Auburn June 16-18


2011 marks the second year that the Relentless Excellence Livestock Judging Camp will be held in Auburn, AL for 4-H, FFA, and AJCA members. This is a terrific educational course for those serious about wanting to learn more about evaluating cattle, sheep, and hogs. For more information on the camp, click here.

U.S. Beef Wins Big in Paris


U.S. beef topped the polls in a unique blind taste challenge at the prestigious Paris trade show, Sial, conducted by an independent French marketing research firm. Participants in the checkoff-supported event picked U.S. strip loins, top blades and flank steaks over top-quality strip loins from Argentina, Ireland, Germany and France. BEEF U Returns to Auburn University April 2nd


Another highlight of the year for many junior cattlemen is the annual BEEF U program held on campus at Auburn University. This is a one-day educational program designed to teach youth and junior advisors about the beef production chain from breeding and selection to harvest and cooking. This year's program features a "Farm to Fork" tract as well as a "Livestock Judging" tract, allowing participants to choose the focus of their day's activities.

Those interested need to pre-register by filling out the registration form and paying a $10 registration fee by March 21st. Online/credit card registration is available as well as mail-in/check registration. For more information, click here.

Senate & House Ag Committees Tour AU Facilities


This week, the Alabama Cattlemen's Association partnered with other members of the Alabama Coalition for Farm Animal Care & Well-Being to host a tour of teaching and research facilities used by the College of Agriculture at Auburn University. The trip was led by Dr. Bill Batchelor, Dean of the College of Agriculture, and offered an opportunity for members of the Alabama Senate and House Agriculture Committees to see first-hand some of the work being done to improve Alabama's ag industry.
