Throwback Thursday: December 2007

Since December is officially on us, and we're beginning to feel the cooler temps that come with it, here's a #ThrowbackThursday to a snow day in December 2007. The ACA staffers were so excited they dressed up the yard decor and posed for a picture! Throwback Thursday: 1977

This week’s #ThrowbackThursday goes back to 1977 in Montgomery at the Southeast Alabama Cattle Marketing Association Sale where attendees paid their 10 cents per head for promoting beef! This sale is still happens annually and its producers continue to support the state checkoff.

Bill Lipscomb is now a leader of this group of producers which will host its annual sale on August 5, 2015 at 7 p.m. and the Will Howard Smith Agricultural Center in Autaugaville, AL. 

Throwback Thursday: 1950-1960

This week’s #ThrowBackThursday took place in 1953 when Alabama was still one of the few states to have conducted a comprehensive beef promotion program. Governor Gordon Persons attached the first promotional “Eat More Beef” bumper sticker to his official Cadillac. With him are 1953 President of the ACA Sen. Preston Clayton, left, and Executive Secretary of the ACA Ham Wilson, right.

Another notable event of 1953 was the creation of the Alabama CowBelles Association. On February 6, 1953, after Mack Maples (outgoing president of the ACA) and Ham Wilson attended the American National Cattlemen’s Association convention where they learned about the recent organization of the American National CowBelles, the CowBelles Association found a home in Alabama with Mrs. Mack Maples serving as the first president. The Alabama CowBelles Association is now known as the Alabama Cattlewomen’s Association. Pictured are some of the earliest photographed CowBelle officers from 1960, Viola Molette, Louise Wilson, Ora Lee Park, Mrs. Flynn Morris and Mrs. J.L. Adams.

ACA's Throwback Thursday

Last Week's #TBT 

(So that you can follow the history lesson over the next few months!)

On January 4, 1944, around 60 cattlemen gathered at the Demopolis Inn in Marengo County to consider making changes to the once-existing Alabama Livestock Growers Association (ALGA). By the conclusion of the meeting, it was decided that ALGA would be laid aside and a new organization would be formed. After electing an officer panel including Sen. Bruce Henderson of Wilcox County as president, Sen. Bob Lowe of Madison County as vice president, W.P. Breen of Greene County as treasurer and Tom C. Reid of Montgomery County as secretary, that organization grew to become the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association we know today.

While ACA’s headquarters are now nicely fixed in the heart of Alabama’s capitol city, this plaque, erected by the Marengo County Cattlemen’s Association on April 29, 1976, honors the Demopolis Inn founding place of the ACA and is last week’s ‪#‎ThrowBackThursday‬.

This week’s #ThrowBackThursday takes us to May 5, 1949 at the Alabama State Fair Grounds in Birmingham, a time when the ACA only had about 200 members. Pictured are members at a convention session during the sixth annual meeting of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association. At this meeting, Will Howard Smith was elected president; Ernest Lambert, vice president; Mack Maples, treasurer; and J.E. Mareno, secretary.
